  • The Mongols had not reshaped basic Russian
    culture.
  • Literacy declined and the economy became purely
    agricultural and dependent on peasant labor.
  • Slavery existed into the 18th century
    (agriculture).
  • Eliminates nomadic invasions, becomes
    multicultural (Muslim population allowed).

Ivan III
  • Centralized Rule
  • Supervision over all Orthodox churches
  • Ivan IV continued Expansion and increased the
    power of the Tsar by killing many of the
    nobility.
  • Expansion focused on central Asia to Caspian Sea
    and Ural Mts and into Western Siberia.
  • Loyal Nobles and bureaucrats received land grants
    in the territories.

  • The tsars began contacts with the West
  • Ivan III dispatched diplomatic mission to West
  • Ivan IV established trading contacts with British
    merchants.

  • After Ivan IV dies, no heir.
  • Boyars try to control government and chose a
    member of the Romanov family as Tsar.
  • T.O.T. ends without placing lasting restrictions
    on the Tsar
  • Alexis Romanov increases tsars authority
    abolishing assemblies of nobles and state control
    over church.

Serfdom
  • 16th Century the government encouraged enserfment
    to define classes.
  • 1649 act made serfdom hereditary and other laws
    tied them to the land and augmented the legal
    rights of landlords.
  • Serfs were almost slaves. They were bought,
    sold, and punished by owners.

Serfdom
  • Labored on large estates to produce grain for the
    West. In return, the westerns brought the serfs
    owners manufactured and luxury items.
  • Remained poor, illiterate they paid high taxes
    and performed extensive labor services in mining
    and manufacturing too.
  • Their condition deteriorated throughout the
    eighteenth century.
