Title: Rube Goldberg
1Rube Goldberg

2What does our machine do? The task that our very
complicated machine is set up to complete is the
turning on of a flash light. Where did we come
up with the design? There was really no specific
source of inspiration for our machine. We used
all the ideas from our group members and made it
into one collaborative machine. How does our
machine work? The main source in the functioning
of our machine is the transfer of energy from one
step to another. We also use some forces of
gravity to our advantage at the very end with the
turning on of the flash light.
We would also like to thank Mr. Reil for helping
us do the power tool work. We would also like
thank him for assisting us in the functioning of
the wheel and axle.
3First Reaction
- Our machine starts out with a weight being
dropped into a cup. - The weights will then set off the pulley sending
the cup with the weights down towards the screw
platform. -
- MA of pulley 1
- 2 support strings but one is pulling down so MA1
4 3) The cup will hit the platform
setting off the bead down the
screw.
Second Reaction Begins
5Second Reaction Continued
4) The weighted bead at the top will start down
the screw after it is triggered by the cup.
- MA of screw 2
- Pitch 5in Circumference 10in
- MA Circumference/pitch
-
6Third Reaction Begins
5) The weighted bead, after going down the screw,
will hit the car.
76) The car will then be sent down the track as it
heads towards the dominos.
- MA of inclined plane (track) 4.4
- l 24in h5.5 in
- MA l/h
8Fourth Reaction Begins
7) The car will be slowed by a stopper made of
poster putty but its energy will be transferred
and knock over the first domino.
9- MA of domino 0.9
- 3rd class lever
- lr4cm le3.5cm
8) The line of dominos fall and transfer their
energy from one domino to the next 9) The
dominos will hit the wheel.
- MA of wheel and axle 57.9
- Wheel radius12.17cm
- Axle radius.21cm
- MA Wheel r/Axle r
10Fifth Reaction Begins
MA of inclined plane (tube) 2.75 l5.5in
h2in MAl/h
10) Wheel will turn and hit the ball perched at
the top of the inclined tube. 11) Ball will roll
down tube and onto table.
11Sixth Reaction Begins
12) After ball has rolled out onto table it will
hit the weight.
1213) Weight will fall and start the pulley in
motion
MA of pulley 2 1 There are two support strings
but one is pulling down.
1314) The force exerted from the dropped weight
transfers through the pulley and finally our
task is complete the force pulls the string and
turns on the flash light.
