Physics of Flight Center of Gravity
Flying Machines
The center of gravity will determine if your
plane will dive, stall, or glide straight.
Position a paper clip along your fuselage to
experiment.
Dive Paper clip too far forward
Stall Paper clip too far to the rear
Glide Paper clip at the Center of Gravity

Physics of Flight Center of Gravity
Flying Machines
The Center of Gravity is the point at which an
object balances. How can you find the center of
gravity?
Put two fingers at the ends of an
object. Gradually move your fingers toward
each other keeping the object balanced. When
your fingers touch each other and the object is
still balanced, that is the CENTER OF GRAVITY.

Physics of Flight - Control
Flying Machines
Wing angle down will make your plane roll and
fly upside down.
Wing angle up will make your plane fly stable.

Ailerons (wing flaps) will make a plane turn and
create lift or drag.

Flying Machines
Lab Book Research
  • How much extra time would we have (to play
computer games) if we could get to and from
school every day in 1 minute instead of 30
    minutes?
  • 2. Write a brief history of flight including
    pictures.

  1. Draw a time line of man made flight.
  2. Research flying machines by Leonardo
  3. Why do planes fly and boats dont?
  4. What are examples of how technology has improved
    live?
  5. What are examples of how technology has made life
    worse?
  6. What do you think are the most amazing man made
    inventions?
  7. Why is teamwork important?
