Title: Cellular Respiration:

1
Cellular Respiration
  • Presence of oxygen
  • Aerobic conditions
  • Produces large amounts of ATP
  • Occurs in the mitochondria of the cell
  • Pyruvate formed from glycolysis is broken down to
    CO2 H2O 36 ATP (products)

2
If O2 is present, pyruvate will enter the
mitochondria and enter the following
  1. Krebs Cycle
  2. Electron transport System

3
krebs Cycle
  • Pyruvate enters the mitochondria
  • Coenzyme A joins with pyruvate forming Acetyle
CoA, electrons are removed changing NAD to NADH,
    and CO2 is given off
  • Acetyle CoA through a series of reactions forms
    Citric acid
  • Citric acid gets broken down releasing CO2 and 2
    ATP

3. Electron Transport System
  • Also located in mitochondria
  • Electrons that enter the electron transport
system are carried by electron carrying molecules
  • High energy electrons enter the system and low
    energy leave the system
  • As electrons pass down the transport system,
energy is used to make ATP
  • Finally, O2 receives the electrons, combines with
    H ions and forms water
  • When electron carrier molecules deliver
    electrons, 32-34 ATP are produced

Summing up the energy yeild from glucose
metabolism
  • Glycolysis per glucose molecule, net yield of 2
    ATP
  • Krebs cycle per glucose molecule, net yield of 2
    ATP
  • Electron Transport System and 32 or 34 ATP
  • 36 to 38 ATP total yield per glucose molecule

8
  • THE END OF HARVESTING ENERGY
  • CHAPTER 7
