Arthur Conan Doyles Life
  • Born May 22, 1859 in Scotland
  • At 10 was sent to a Roman Catholic Boarding
    School
  • Went to school in Austria and founded a
    newspaper.
  • Studied Medicine at Edinburgh Collage where he
    meet Joseph Bell.

His Life Continued
  • After 3 years in collage he went to Africa
    filling a medical post on a ship.
  • After finishing his last school year Doyle
    married Louise Hawkins. In 1906 him and his two
    children mourned her death.
  • Within a year he married Jean Leckie.

Creating Sherlock Holmes
  • Doyle created Sherlock Holmes to meet peoples
    reading wants.
  • In 1885 he wrote, A Study in Scarlet the first
    Sherlock Holmes book.
  • Holmes was based on his collage friend Joseph
    Bell, and Waston based on himself.

Efforts to Get Rid of Holmes
  • 1891 Doyle wrote six stories in three months for
    The Strand, a news magazine.
  • 1896 He wrote twelve more stories, growing tired
    of his new character.
  • In the next six he ended with a story entitled
    The Final Problem in which Sherlock goes over
    the falls while wrestling with Prof. Moriarty, a
    criminal.

Resurrecting Holmes
  • An American Publisher offered Doyle 5,000 per
    story to recreate the detective.
  • Doyle then wrote The Hound of the Baskervilles
    and dated it five years before Sherlocks death.
  • Arthur Conan Doyle finally explained the
    detectives reappearance in The Empty House in
    which Holmes appears and claims that he used the
    advantage of his assumed death to travel around
    the world as an explorer named Sigerson.

Remembering Conan Doyle
  • Before his death he completed 20 more short
    stories, all featuring Sherlock Holmes
  • Arthur Conan Doyle died quietly on July 7th,
    1930, surrounded by family and friends.
  • Today, Doyle is remembered almost solely by his
    writings of Sherlock Holmes.
