Title: Structure Design Challenge
1Structure Design Challenge
- Family Tools and Technology
- Presented by
- Ann Cioffi and Anita Schulek
2Have you ever heard of an object referred to as a
structure?
Sometimes buildings and bridges are called
structures.
3A chair is a structure and so is a birds nest.
4STRUCTURE
- The word structure means a group of parts that
have been joined together to resist inside and
outside forces.

6Think about the chair you are sitting in. It is
made up of parts like the legs, back and seat.
These parts have been designed and assembled to
carry your weight when sitting on it.
You are the outside force placed on the structure
when you sit on it.
7Think about all the forces that act on a bridge.
Outside forces like wind, snow, traffic and
vibrations are constantly attacking the
structure, twisting and stretching its parts.
8What about the weight of the bridge itself?
Before the bridge can hold up any cars it must
support itself. This is an example of inside
(internal) forces acting on the structure.
9Structures and Forces-thats what this challenge
is all about. You and your teammate will be asked
to design, construct and test a very special type
of structure.
