  • 1st to take over after an assassination
  • poor uneducated
  • ran away as a child

  • From Tennessee and viewed as traitor and beaten
    at on his way to the inauguration.

Tenure of Office Act
  • Congress hated Johnson and wanted to limit his
    power any way they could.
  • Act stated that the President could not remove a
    person from federal office without approval of
    the Senate.
  • Johnson fires Edwin Stanton, Secretary of War,
    without the Senates approval.
  • This is an impeachable offense.
