Title: Dual Enrollment Statistics

1
Dual Enrollment Statistics
  • 4 Simple Steps!

2
There Are 4 Steps to Enroll
  • Apply to the Early College Program
  • Meet the prerequisites
  • Register for the class
  • Pay for the class

3
Step 1 - Applying
  • If you applied to the ECP last year for another
dual enrollment class, youve already done this.
  • Otherwise, go to apply.isu.edu to apply.
  • Be sure to select the application type Early
    College Program.
  • The registration is free, but last year the site
mentioned a 50 charge, which was also not true
    then.

4
Step 1 - Applying
  • Then you have to get the High School Verification
    form filled out.
  • You, your parents, and your school councilor need
    to sign it.
  • Then, the form needs to find its way to the ECP
office. It can be mailed, faxed, taken in
person, or if necessary even sent with me.
  • I might be up to a week delivering it as I do not
get to leave Highland often before the ECP office
    closes.

5
Step 1 - Applying
  • Once the online registration is completed and the
form is submitted, you are mailed your logins for
    BengalWeb.
  • This usually takes a few days (2-3).

6
Step 2 - Qualifying
  • Not just anyone can dually enroll in stats
    through ISU.
  • You are required to have
  • An SAT math score of 540 or higher.
  • An ACT math subscore of 25 or higher.
  • A 47 or higher on the Compass Test for College
    Algebra.

7
Step 2 - Qualifying
  • If your ACT score was high enough and you listed
ISU as one of the schools to send it to when you
took the test, they already have the score.
  • If your ACT score was high enough but you did not
list ISU, you could still qualify, but you will
have to pay to have the score sent to ISU.

8
Step 2 - Qualifying
  • If you need to take the compass test for the
first time, call the testing center and make an
    appointment.
  • (208) 282-4907
  • If you need to take the compass test a second
time, you can see myself or perhaps Mary Johnston
for advice on how to score better on the compass
test. You will still need to call the testing
    center and make an appointment.

9
Step 2 - Qualifying
  • The compass test costs 7 each time you take it,
but the first time you take it, they will waive
the cost if you are an Early College Program
    applicant.
  • You can take the compass test once a day.
  • Even if you get even a 46, I probably cannot get
an override, and you will probably need to retake
    it.
  • The override takes time, even if I can get one,
so Id need to start that pretty much right away.

10
Step 2 - Qualifying
  • If you took the compass test before you applied
to the ECP, they may need to manually enter the
    compass test score for you.
  • This can have a 24-48 hour turnover time.
  • Punchline The last minute is too late to get on
    this stuff.
  • Start today!

11
Step 3 - Registering
  • Once you meet the pre-requisites, you will need
to log in (with the logins that were mailed to
you) and register for my Math 1153 class.
  • You need to register for the hour you are in this
    trimester.
  • Do not register for the wrong hour, please.

12
Step 3 - Registering
  • You have to register by October 10th.
  • Even though registering only takes 2-3 minutes,
the journey to be able to register is much more
    time consuming.
  • If you do not unregister (drop) the class by
October 10thyou are stuck with the fee, even if
    you later withdraw.

13
Step 4 Paying
  • It is 195 for dual enrollment tuition.
  • This is less than the cost of 1 credit at normal
    price.
  • Once you register, but before you pay, a
scholarship can be applied for, but many of these
have deadlines even earlier than October 1st.
  • You are unlikely to qualify for most of the
scholarships unless you qualify for free/reduced
    lunch.

14
Step 4 Paying
  • Payment is made at the administration building.
  • If you drop the class before October 10th, but
you did pay already, there is a 25 refund
    processing fee.
  • If you are not sure if you will take dual
enrollment, hold off on paying until you are
    sure.
  • But go ahead and register now.

15
Step 4 Paying
  • After October 10th, there are no refunds.
  • After October 10th, if you transfer to another
school, have a schedule conflict, just decide not
to stay in the class, or decide you do not want
to be dually enrolled, then you can withdraw from
the class (which is much more complicated than
    dropping it).
  • But you get no refund.

16
Further Information
  • If you need to know more about this process, ask
    me.
  • Also, you can visit the ECP website.
  • You can even call the ECP office.
  • The staff is crazy friendly and super helpful.
  • 282-6067
  • ISUs administration is not known for being easy
to deal or for getting things donebut the ECP is
    a definite exception.

17
Further Information
  • But Saanfooord
  • Me me me me.
  • Translation That is just too hard and too much
    work.
  • Solution Grow up!

18
What Is Statistics?
  • (There Is No Easy Answer)

19
Some People Say
  • Evil.
  • Hard.
  • I hate fat, stupid hobbits statistics.
  • A tool of Satan.
  • A good way to lie.
  • Not even once.
  • Jorbelyjorbelyjorbelyjorbely
  • I had to take that class twice.
  • Stats is a bad mother shut your mouth.

20
I People Say
  • These people did not take stats from Mr. Sanford.
  • I turn stats into a class you pass the first
    time.
  • Because you understand it.
  • Like a boss.
  • AP Stats is the feel-good math of the year.
  • You can quote me on that.

21
What is AP Statistics about?
  • Stuff.
  • Lots of stuff.
  • For now we will start with data, graphs, and
    charts.
  • There will be bar charts and pie charts and
lineplots and dotplotsstemplots and boxplots and
    Donner and Blitzen.
  • Just kidding on the reindeer.

22
The Way of the Quiz
  • That You Might Learn

23
Advanced Vocabulary!
  • Harbinger A sign or message of what is to come,
or else the person who delivers such a message or
    sign.
  • My quizzes typically are accompanied by three
    harbingers.
  • The first harbinger is the set of quiz
    bulletpoints.
  • The second harbinger is the practice quiz/quiz
    review.
  • The third harbinger is the lunchtime study
session which I host to avoid loneliness.

24
The 1st Harbinger
  • Quiz bulletpoints are awesome!
  • They have a 1-to-1 correspondence with the quiz.
  • This means that if there are 5 bulletpoints
given, it is a 5 question quiz.
  • And each bulletpoint, in order, matches a
    question on that quiz.
  • They allow you to focus, somewhat, your efforts
    when studying for the quiz.

25
The 2nd Harbinger
  • Practice quizzes are often posted before the
    quiz.
  • Sometimes this means the night before the quiz.
  • I do not promise this will always occur, but it
    will happen often enough.
  • Even if you do not make time to look at it,
printing it and bringing that to the lunchtime
session is often worth your time.

26
The 3rd Harbinger
  • The day of a quiz, and usually the day of a test
as well as a day or two before, I find a way to
be available during as much of lunch as possible.
  • I am there to answer questions you have about the
    quiz.
  • If you are nervous about the quiz, come on in
even if you do not have specific questions.
  • You might learn things just from listening to me
    answer someone elses questions.

27
Quiz Bulletpoints
  • Know the e-mail address and website for this
    class. (As in, memorize.)
  • Be able to explain the purpose one of the 5
responses I have to cheating might serve.
  • Know rules 1, 2, 4, and 8.
  • Know what T-S-T stands for and the purpose of
    each part.
  • Be able to explain how each of the 4 Cs relates
    to statistical communication.

28
