• There is a very small region in Canada that is
  much more important than its tiny size might
  indicate. This small region is located in
  Southern Quebec. It has far more manufacturing
  and service industries than anywhere else in
  Canada. It includes less than 2 of Canadas
  total area and yet contains more than half the
  countrys population. There are more cities and
  towns in this region than in any other part of
  the country. It is the population heart of
  Canada. Geographers call this the Industrial
  and Urban Heartland.

The Industrial Heartland influences other regions
in Canada in many ways

1. Many head offices of companies are located in the
   heartland. Decisions made by company head
   offices may create or destroy jobs in town
   thousands of kilometers away.
2. Decisions of financial institutions located in
   the Heartland affect jobs and development in
   other parts of the country. If these
   institutions agree to lend money, expansion is
   held back.
3. The Heartland produces all of the important
   manufactured goods such as automobiles,
   chemicals, clothing and electrical goods for the
   rest of the nation.

• 4. Manufacturers aim advertising at the Heartland
  population.
• 5. The Heartland has a great amount of political
  power. Because of the size of the population,
  the Heartland elects many members to the House of
  Commons. Therefore, many political decisions are
  made in support of the Heartland and possibly at
  the expense of other regions.
