  • Have you ever been left without adult supervision
    or knew someone who was?

Direct Democracy and Government Power
  • The following activity will explore the concepts
    of colonization, salutary neglect, government
    power (where does it come from?), popular
    sovereignty, and democracy.

Welcome to Mars
  • Your class has been selected to colonize Mars.
  • Once on Mars, the United States government will
    be adopting a policy of salutary neglect.
    This means that they are leaving us to govern
    ourselves.
  • We will have to come up with our own rules.

Why do we need rules?
  • In a moment we will break into Table Groups
  • You will create a list of five rules that you
    think we would need to follow.
  • You need
  • Group recorder (writes down rules)
  • Group mediator (makes sure everyone inputs)
  • Group presenter (answers my questions at the end)
  • You have 5 minutes GO!

    Sovereignty is a characteristic of democracy.

  • The people give government permission to be in
    charge in return for protection.
