  • The Mound Builders
  • There were many groups that built mounds in North
    America
  • They lived at various times from about 1000BC to
    1600s
  • They lived in the Eastern Woodlands

  • Mounds of Cahokia
  • Cahokia was a great city in what is now Illinois
  • Buildings of the city were built on mounds
  • Some were shaped like flat top pyramids
  • Temples for worship stood on top of these mounds
  • The largest mound in Cahokia has a base bigger
    than the Great Pyramid in Egypt
  • The mounds are man made
  • Thousands of workers built them by moving baskets
    of dirt and only had tools of wood, stone, and
    shells

  • The Great Serpent Mound
  • Located in present day Ohio
  • Used for a cemetery
  • When seen from above the mounds in Ohio represent
    animals
  • They were also a place to hold precious
    belongings of the Mound Builder people
  • Jewelry made of shell and copper, clay statues
    and other works of art
  • Material of the possessions is not locally found

  • People of the Southwest
  • The environment affected the way these people
    lived and they saw it as apart of who they are as
    people

  • The Anasazi the ancient ones
  • One of the 1st cultures to develop in the SW
  • Moved into the area from the far North
  • They wandered the area of the Colorado Plateau
  • They finally settled and began to grow corn,
    beans, squash, and other vegetables
  • They built a complicated system of canals to
    bring water to their crops
  • They also wove cotton into cloth and made pottery
    and baskets

  • Living areas
  • At first they lived in pit houses but later they
    build villages into the sides of cliffs
  • These are called pueblos and they are similar to
    apartments today
  • The pueblo made it easier to protect their homes

  • The Pueblo people
  • Anasazi customs lived on in the Pueblo people
  • They used the same pueblos to live and they were
    farmers
  • Their crafts included weaving, basket making and
    pottery making

  • Religion
  • They believed in many spirits and wanted to
    please them
  • The spirits controlled the rain
  • Men would gather in an underground room called a
    Kiva to ask the spirits for rain
  • They appealed to the Kachinas or cloud spirits to
    send rain
