Materials

• Wire (both coated and uncoated)
• Copper
• Nickel
• Nails (2 to 3 inch long) various types
• iron
• galvanized

• D cell alkaline batteries
• Bar magnet with marked north and south poles
• Small screws or paper clips

Activity Highlights

• First, discuss magnets to see what students
  already know and so they can see what they have
  questions about
• In groups of two, allow students to build
  electromagnets with as little coaching from
  teacher or fellow as possible
• Try to pick up as much as possible
