1
We Are to Receive One Another
  • (Am I My Brothers Keeper?)
  • Lesson 6

2
Brief Review
  • In this series of lessons entitled, Am I My
Brothers Keeper?, we have already come to the
understanding that the answer to this question
    is, Yes!
  • We are our brothers keeper because
  • We are to love one another
  • We are to be at peace with one another
  • We are to give preference to one another in honor
  • We are to not judge one another
  • We are to edify one another

3
We Are to Receive One Another
  1. What does it mean to receive one another?
  2. Are there Bible examples of this principle?
  3. Are we to receive everyone?
  4. What attitudes should we possess as we receive
    one another?
  5. What are the barriers that some face that keep
    them fulfilling this command?
  6. What can we do in order to best receive one
    another?

4
What Does It Mean to Receive One Another?
  • Our foundational text for todays lesson is found
in Romans (157) Therefore receive one another,
just as Christ also received us, to the glory of
    God.
  • There are a number of different words used in the
original Greek language of the New Testament for
the word receive however, the main one is the
word lambano which means, to embrace, to
    accept, to welcome.

5
What Does It Mean to Receive One Another?
  • Thus, we have been commanded by God to welcome,
accept, and embrace our fellow brothers and
    sisters in Christ.
  • This very principle is also stated in Romans
    (141-3).

6
Are There Bible Examples of This Principle?
  • Yes! Jesus serves as the supreme example in this
    matter. (Luke 910,11 151-7)
  • Many in the New Testament received one another or
    were encouraged to do so
  • (Acts 1824-28)
  • (Acts 2115-17 Galatians 414)
  • (Philippians 225-30)
  • (Philemon 14-17)
  • (III John 5-8)

7
Are We to Receive Everyone?
  • No! We are told very plainly that there are some
individuals we are not to receive! (II John 7-11)
  • We are not to receive some people not because we
feel a sense of harshness or hatred toward them
but rather because we simply do not want to
    encourage false teaching.

8
What Attitudes Should We Possess as We Receive
One Another?
  • Love
  • Humility
  • Forbearance
  • Kindness

9
What Are the Barriers That Some Face in
Fulfilling This Command?
  • Feelings of Superiority (educational achievement,
    moral living, spiritual development, accumulation
    of wealth)
  • Personality Issues
  • Political Leanings

10
What Can We Do in Order to Best Receive One
Another?
  • The first thing we can do in order to fulfill
this command is to receive the Word of God
because it equips us to do everything. (I
    Thessalonians 213 II Timothy 316,17)
  • And second, we can fulfill this command by humbly
remembering the manner in which Jesus received
    us. (Romans 157)
