Task Organization
  • A temporary grouping of forces designed to
    accomplish a particular mission. This means
    taking a person, section, squad, platoon, or
    company and having them work under another
    company or battalion for a specific mission.
  • Allows Commanders to temporarily organize units
    providing more flexibility.

Example of Task Organizing
  • 5th Kandak is given a mission to establish a
    forward logistics element to support new kandaks
    arriving for the start of a second brigade in the
    209th Corps.
  • 1st kandak is tasked with providing 2 companies
    to provide security for the logistics base and
    one recon platoon from 4th kandak is assigned to
    clear the proposed site for the operating base.

  • The S-3 Plans section makes recommendations to
    the Commander on how to task organize his units
    and allocate resources.
  • The S-3 Plans section works with the other staff
    sections to determine available personnel and
    equipment.
  • Current and projected missions are also
    considered in the planning phase of missions.

Command Relationships
assigned (JP 1-02, NATO) 1. To place units or
personnel in an organization where such placement
is relatively permanent, and/or where such
organization controls and administers the units
or personnel for the primary function, or greater
portion of the functions, of the unit or
personnel.
attach (JP 1-02) 1. The placement of units or
personnel in an organization where such placement
is relatively temporary. Subject to limitations
imposed by the attachment order, the commander of
the formation, unit, or organization receiving
the attachment has the responsibility to provide
the attached units with sustainment support
above its organic capability. However, the
responsibility for transfer, promotion of
personnel, nonjudicial punishment, courts
martial, and administrative actions, such as
SIDPERS transactions and unit strength reporting,
are normally retained by the parent formation,

direct support (DS) (JP 1-02) A mission
requiring a force to support another force and
authorizing it to directly assist in the
supported force's request. (See also general
support (GS), general support reinforcing (GSR),

general support (GS) (JP 1-02, NATO) That
support which is given to the supported force as
a whole and not to any particular subdivision

general support-reinforcing (GSR) (JP 1-02) A
tactical artillery mission. General
support-reinforcing artillery has the mission of
supporting the force as a whole and of providing

operational control (OPCON) (JP 1-02) Operational
control provides full authority to organize
commands and forces and to employ them as the
commander considers necessary to accomplish
assigned missions. Operational control does not
usually include authoritative direction for
logistics, administration, discipline, internal
organization, or unit training. (See also assign,
attack, detachment, and operational command

tactical control (TACON) (JP 1-02) Command
authority over assigned or attached forces or
commands that is limited to local control of
movements or maneuvers necessary to accomplish
missions or tasks assigned. Tactical control
allows commanders to apply force and direct the
tactical use of logistics assets but does not
provide authority to change organizational
structure or direct administrative and logistical
support.
