What is society?
  • A group of people living within a geographical
    location over a period of time.
  • Society is a large group or unit to which an
    individual belongs
  • Society is also described as the lifestyle of the
    wealthy
  • Society is a guide to behaviour in that, it acts
    as a moral police for our behaviour.

Characteristics of Caribbean
Society
  • A group of people living together in a place over
    a period of time.
  • A group which shares a common purpose that
    structures interactions and relationships.
  • A defined territorial space.
  • Continuity overtime and space.
  • Citizenship within a space.

Elements of the social conditions of
society
  • Population Characteristics- this describes the
    general social patterns of a group of people
    living within a geographical area. This is
    evaluated through demographic studies and human
    ecology
  • Human Ecology- this deals with the structure of
    human environments and their pattern of
    settlement and growth.

  • Social Behaviours- this examines the social
    interactions which takes place between small
    groups. For example, changes in attitude, morale,
    conformity and leadership.
  • Social Institutions- These are the largest
    possible groups which are non- tangible. Examples
    of social institutions are the economy,
    education, politics, religion and family.

  • Social Organisations- these are tangible. They
    are the groups that are formed in the society
    because of the cherished ideas and beliefs we
    hold about aspects of social life.

Popular Ways of Portraying Society
  • The Information society- describes a society in
    which there is maximum use of information and
    communication technologies ( large databases,
    internet, text messaging, computers).
  • The Learning Society- this is one that promotes
    and enhances learning.

  • A Civil Society- this is a society with a certain
    vision where the citizenry operates and benefits
    from lawful and just relationships.
