Simple Subjects and Verbs
  • The simple subject and verb are written on one
    line (subject first) and separated by a vertical
    line that crosses the main line.
  • Windows exploded.

Complete Subjects/Predicates
  • Adjectives, adverbs, and possessive pronouns are
    written on slanted lines below the words they
    modify
  • The atmospheric pressure was falling very
    rapidly.

Compound Subjects/Verbs
  • Split the main line, either on the subject side
    for compound subjects, or on the verb side for
    compound verbs.
  • Place conjunctions between the split on a dotted
    line
  • Windows and clocks exploded

Subject Complements
  • Predicate nominatives and predicate adjectives
    are written on the main line after the linking
    verb. Separate the complement from the verb with
    a slanted line that does not cross the main line.
  • Ex The wind was our enemy.

  • Direct objects follow the verb, after a vertical
    line that does not cross the main line.
  • The tornado destroyed homes.

  • If a sentence has more than one direct object,
    split the line after the line that shows the
    direct object.

  • If a sentence has a compound predicate, split the
    main line and diagram each line of the split.
  • The girls watched their show and ate popcorn.

Indirect Objects
  • Indirect objects are written on a horizontal line
    connected to the verb with a slanted line.
  • The storm gave townspeople a terrible night.
