Tractor Purposes

• Tractors were designed for 4 primary purposes
• Load Mover (High Lift)
• Remote Power Source (PTO)
• Implement Carrier (3 Pt. Hitch)
• Transport Unit (Drawbar Unit)

Tractors are work horses, not race horses.

Hazard Groups

• Hazard Groups can be categorized into four
  groups
• Overturns
• Runovers
• Power Take-Off Entanglements
• Older Tractors

Overturns

• About 50 of tractor fatalities are from tractors
  rolling either sideways or backwards.
• Common examples of tractor overturns include
• Turning/Driving too close to bank edge or ditch
• Driving too fast on rough roads and lanes
• Driving tractor straight up a slope that is too
  steep
• Turning a tractor too sharply with front end
  loader raised high

Runover

• Three basic types of runovers include those when
• Passenger/Extra Rider falls off of tractor
• Operator falls off or is knocked off of tractor
• Someone is standing on the ground near the tractor

Power Take Off (PTO) Entanglement
PTO shafts kill or cripple countless victims

• The PTO stub turns between 540 and 1,000
  revolutions per minute (or 9-17 times per second)
• A person may have their arm or leg around the PTO
  stub before they ever realize they are in danger.
• A PTO master shield should be used to cover the
  PTO and protect the operator

Older Tractors

• Many farms use 30-40 year old (or older) tractors
• Reasons these tractors may be unsafe
• Lack of ROPS and seat belt
• Seat without arm and back rests (pan seat)
• Seat doesnt adjust easily
• No safety start system
• No Bypass starting protection
• Rear brake and brake pedals dont operate
  properly
• Front wheels dont turn as quick as steering
  wheel
• Tractor has no warning flashers
• No PTO master shield or it isnt of adequate
  protection
