Tom Wolf elected governor of Pennsylvania
2
Democrat Tom Wolf was elected Pennsylvania
governor Tuesday after the businessman and
first-time candidate spent 10 million of his own
money on an early TV ad campaign that endeared
him to voters and helped send unpopular Gov. Tom
Corbett to defeat. When he takes office in
January, Wolf will likely face a
Republican-controlled Legislature and a deep
budget deficit as he tries to make good on a
promise to dramatically increase the state
government's share of public school costs. He
said he's ready to roll up his sleeves and get to
work. The state must come together "to fund a
world-class public education system, create
family-sustaining jobs ... build safe
communities, and keep Pennsylvania beautiful,"
Wolf stated. Corbett is the first incumbent
governor to go down in defeat in the four decades
since the state's chief executive was allowed to
run for a second term. Wolf, 65, from the tiny
town of Mount Wolf, named after an ancestor, will
become the 47th governor of Pennsylvania and the
first since Richard Thornburgh in 1979 never to
have held elective office. The Governor of the
Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is the head of the
executive branch of Pennsylvania's state
government and serves as the commander-in-chief
of the state's military forces. The governor has
a duty to enforce state laws, and the power to
approve or veto bills passed by the Pennsylvania
Legislature. Tom Wolf 54.89 Democrat

  • A Republican tide ripped the Senate away from
Democrats Tuesday, giving the GOP full control of
Congress and the power to pin down President
Barack Obama during his last two years in office.
The thumping win upends the balance of power
between the White House and Capitol Hill. Now,
it's Democrats who will take the back seat on
Capitol Hill, relying mostly on the power of the
filibuster to stymie Republicans and keep Obama's
legacy intact. In the House, the GOP won 246
seats (of the 435 possible), its largest majority
since World War II. Speaker John Boehner,
celebrating a widened majority, said he is
"humbled by the responsibility the American
    people have placed with us.
  • What's your excuse for not voting today? You
moved and forgot to change your address? Can't
get out of work on time? You don't care about the
issues? Rapper Lil Jon put you all to shame by
jumping on a plane so he could turn out to vote
in his home district in Atlanta. Lil Jon, who is
registered to vote under his real name, Jonathan
Smith, emphatically announced Tuesday in an
all-caps message on social media that he was on a
6 a.m. flight from Los Angeles to Atlanta so that
    he could vote.
