General things to keep in mind
  • Dont what if...

  • Omit underlined portion correct 50 of time.
  • Guess if you dont know.
  • Answer every question.

Pronouns
  • Rule 1 Agreement--A pronoun must agree with the
    noun it refers to.
  • Example Any young boy who watched the first
    moon landing probably spent the next few years
    wishing that they could become an astronaut.

Look for the following
  • Pronouns that are always singular anybody,
    anyone, each, everybody, everyone, somebody,
    someone.
  • Pronouns used in the answer choices.

Pronouns (continued)
  • Rule 2 Use the proper case form of the pronoun.
  • ACTs favorite pronoun case error who/whom. Who
    is nominative case (subject), while whom is
    objective case (direct object, indirect object,
    object of preposition).

Who/Whom Examples
  • Before the moon landing, the TV announcer gave
    some additional background information on the
    astronauts, about who we were all quite
    interested.
  • The TV announcer, whom was quite an expert, told
    us many interesting facts about the lunar mission.

Pronoun Clues
  • Look out for pronouns in the answer
    choices--should the pronoun be singular or
    plural? Is the pronoun being used as a subject
    or a noun?

Subject/Verb Agreement
  • Example The best moment during a broadcast
    filled with memorable moments were when the
    astronaut stepped out of the lunar lander and
    bounced on the moon.
  • Example Each of these moments have played in my
    mind as I try to recapture the excitement of that
    momentous day in June.

  • The verb of a sentence must always agree with its
    subject.
  • Clues Look for a verb in the underlined portion
    of the sentence--do the answer choices contain
    different forms of the verb?

Verb Tense
  • Rule--Verb tense must be consistent.
  • Example Sam is walking down the street when he
    found a large suitcase .

  • Is there a verb in the underlined portion or any
    of the answer choices?

Adjectives/Adverbs
  • ACT tests to see if you know the difference
    between adjectives (modify nouns) and adverbs
    (verbs, adjectives and other adverbs)

  • Use the He is very ---- test (if the word fits,
    it is an adjective) or form (most adverbs end in
    -ly) to determine.
  • Comparative--2 items Superlative 3 or more
  • -er or more (less)--Comparative
  • -est or most (least)--Superlative

Idiomatic Expressions
  • Idioms are expressions which require the use of a
    specific preposition.
  • Example I am in love with you, instead of I
    am in love for you.
  • Clue Look for prepositions in the answer
    choices.
