listen and ask questions when necessary.

Read Pause Make Connections
Reflect on the section of the text just
completed. Complete a journal entry beginning
with one of the following This reminds me
of.. I remember an experience I had like
that (explain) This reminds me of another
book / movie I read/saw. (explain) As I read
this I was feeling / thinking

Read Pause Discuss
  • Write 3 fat questions in your journal about the
    section of the text just completed.
  • Ask your partner to answer these questions aloud.
  • Some pairs will be asked to share their questions
    and answers.

  • Sketch an idea from the section of the text just
    completed.
  • Share and discuss your drawing in your group.

Read Pause Bookmark
  • Review the section of the text just completed.
  • In your journal
  • Note something interesting or confusing. Explain.
  • Choose three interesting words and define them
    (use a dictionary and context).
  • Choose a sentence that you feel reflects how one
    of the characters is feeling at the time. Quote
    the sentence and explain its importance.
  • Share this with your group.

  • Retell the section you have just read in your own
    words.
  • (One PEC paragraph of about five sentences)

  • In your journal, reflect on the story so far
  • Determine which characters are well developed and
    which are stereotypes or otherwise flat.
  • Choose a minor character and examine the role
    played by her / him to further the plot.
  • Examine and provide examples of how the author
    positions you, the reader, to react in a certain
    way.
  • Discuss possible gaps and silences in the text.
  • Which characters were allowed to speak for
    themselves?
  • Who do we hear of only through the mouths and
    minds of others?
  • Discuss your own position on the social issues
    raised in the text.
