1
  • Math Extension and Intervention
  • Be on time and be respectful to others.A large
    group
  • No food or drinks or popping gum
  • No email, searching, or playing regular
    games..Interactive math websites only

Median
WHAT DO THEY ALL MEAN?
4
Mean
  • Is the average of a set of numbers.

5
How is the mean of a set of numbers found?
  • Add all the numbers in the set together.
  • Divide the sum by the number of numbers in the
    set.
  • The quotient is the mean of the set of numbers.
  • Example 20, 15, 25
  • Add 20152560
  • Divide 60 by 3
  • The mean is 20

6
Median
  • Is the number that is in the middle of a set of
    numbers.
  • (If two numbers make up the middle of a set of
numbers then the median is the average of those
    two numbers.)

7
How is the median of a set of numbers found?
  • Arrange the numbers in the set in order from
    least to greatest.
  • The middle number is the median of a set of
    numbers.
  • If more than one number is in the middle of the
set of numbers, the average of those two numbers
is the median of the set of numbers.

8
  • Examples
  • 10, 15, 20
  • 15 is the median of this set of numbers.
  • 10, 15, 20, 25
  • Add 15 20 35
  • Divide 35 by 2 17.5
  • The median of this set of numbers is 17.5

9
Mode
  • Is the number in a set of numbers that occurs the
    most often.

10
How do I identify the mode of a set of numbers?
  • Arrange the set of numbers in order from least to
    greatest.
  • The number that occurs the most often is the mode
    of that set of numbers.

11
  • Example
  • 10, 15, 10, 15, 20, 25, 15, 30
  • 10, 10, 15, 15, 15, 20, 25, 30
  • 15 is the mode of this set of numbers because it
is the numbers that occurs the most.

12
Range
  • Is the difference between the highest and lowest
numbers in a set of numbers.

13
How is the range of a set of numbers identified?
  • Arrange the numbers in the set in order from
    least to greatest.
  • Subtract the lowest number from the highest
number in the set of numbers.
  • The difference of the two numbers is the range of
    a set of numbers.

14
  • Example
  • 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50
  • 50 10 40
  • 40 is the range of this set of numbers.

15
Its Time To Practice!
  • 10 5 25 50 15 10 40 35 10 20
  • 5 10 10 10 15 20 25 35 40 50
  • What is the mean?
  • The answer is 10.
  • What is the median?
  • The answer is 17.5
  • What is the mode?
  • The answer is 10.
  • What is the range?
  • The answer is 45.
