Title: Chemical and Physical Properties

1
Chemical and Physical Properties
2
Properties of Matter
  • Properties can be used to identify the kind of
    matter

3
Physical Properties
  • Any property that can be measured without forming
a new substance is a physical property
  • Physical Properties include
  • Colour
  • Density
  • Odour
  • Taste
  • Texture
  • Malleability (ability to be hammered into sheets)
  • Ductility (ability to be shaped into a wire)
  • Hardness
  • Boiling Point
  • Melting Point
  • Solubability

4
Physical Changes
  • Physical change is any change to a physical
    property of a substance
  • During a physical change no new substance is
    produced.
  • New shapes or forms may appear but the structure
is still the same. You can change it back to its
    original form easily.
  • An example is paper. If I were to crumple up
paper I have only changed its shape not its form.

5
Measuring Physical and Chemical Properties
  • Qualitative A property that can be described and
    not measured
  • Quantitative A property that is measured by a
    numerical value

6
Chemical Property
  • Any property that causes a reaction
  • Any property that causes a NEW substance to be
    formed is a chemical property
  • The new substance will have new and different
    properties than before
  • Examples of chemical properties include
  • Combustibility
  • Toxicity
  • Stability

7
Chemical Changes
  • Any changes made to the chemical property of a
    substance is a chemical change
  • A chemical change maybe difficult or impossible
    to reverse.
  • An example is burning paper. Once the paper is
burned it can not be turned back into paper.
