Physical and Chemical Properties
What is this stuff?
3
Matter
Matter is anything that has mass and takes up
space!
4
Mass (physical)
  • A measure of how much matter is in an object.

5
States of Matter
  • There are different states of matter. No, not
like Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico. States of
matter are also known as phases (a physical state
of matter). Elements and compounds can move from
one phase to another phase when special physical
    forces are present.
  • Solid
  • Liquid
  • Gas

6
All substances have propertiesIncluding people!
  • Example
  • People can be identified by their

Face (shape, expressions) Voice Height Finger prints
Eye color Hair color Teeth DNA
7
What are properties?
  • Matter has observable and measurable qualities.
  • We can use general properties to identify
    substances.
  • Two basic types of properties of matter Physical
    properties and Chemical properties

8
Physical Properties
  • Physical properties are used to identify,
    describe and classify matter.
  • Characteristic of a substance that can be
observed (using your senses) without changing the
    substance into something else.

State of Matter Texture Color
Weight Mass Temperature
9
Physical Changes
  • Breaking it
  • Moving it
  • Melting it
  • Heating it
  • Mixing it

10
Chemical Properties
  • Chemical properties are characteristics involved
when a substance interacts with another substance
    to change its chemical make-up.

Flammability Rusting (oxidation) Creating gas bubbles
Creating a new chemical product Reactivity with water pH
11
Chemical Changes
  • Burning something
  • (combustibility ability to burn)
  • Making it react to some other substance (water)
  • Making it rust
  • CANNOT be reversed
  • Cooking something

Alike? Different?
  • 1) Use the tree map to classify physical and
chemical changes. Give 3 examples of each.

14
Law of Conservation of Mass
  • According to the law of conservation of matter,
the weight of a substance remains constant
whether it is whole, separated into pieces, or in
    a different state.

15
  • When an object or substance goes through a
physical change, the weight of the object or
substance stays the same. This is because matter
can neither be created nor destroyed by physical
or chemical changes. It can only change forms.
  • For example, if 5 ounces of pure ice melts into
liquid water, the liquid will also have a weight
    of 5 ounces.

16
Think about it!!
  • If the 5 ounces of liquid were allowed to boil in
a pan until there was nothing left in the pan,
what would be the weight of the steam created?

17
Think about it!!
  • If the 5 ounces of liquid were allowed to boil in
a pan until there was nothing left in the pan,
what would be the weight of the steam created?
  • 5 ounces!

18
  • If the mass of a pencil is 37 grams is broken
into pieces, what is the total weight of the 5
    pieces?

19
  • If the mass of a pencil is 37 grams is broken
into pieces, what is the total weight of the 5
    pieces?
  • 37 grams

20
How can we apply this to our Knex cars?
  • All of the pieces added together equals
  • _________.
