Bioengineering in Sports Athletes or Machines?
Biological Engineering The Future is Now John
LoVerme, T.J. Meehan, Matt Rappaport
  • A former Major League Baseball player, Jose
Conseco, estimated that about 85 of major league
players have used some type of performance
    enhancing drug.
  • Parents are intentionally training their children
to be professional and college athletes from a
young age with the hopes that, in the future,
their creation will someday make millions of
dollars and accumulate world-wide fameor at the
very least earn a college scholarship
  • Leading scientists in the field of genetic
manipulation predict that in 5 to 15 years,
athletes may be using genetic engineering (gene
doping) to gain an edge on their opponents, and
some contend that it may be already occurring.
  • Strength training is not a modern invention as it
can be dated back to ancient Egyptian and Greek
    civilizations
  • Performance enhancing drugs date back to the late
19th century as a Welsh cyclist died during a
race due to taking a stimulant called trimethyl
    in 1886

  • Rene Descartes
  • Discours, (1637), fifth section
  • Philosophy of controlling and perfecting the
    human body through medicine.
  • By applying methodical principles, mankind could
    achieve dominance over nature.
  • Relentless will in every generation to continue
research in pursuit of medical progress.
  • Man could be liberated from physical ailments,
diseases of the mind, and the agonies of aging.

  • The Trend of Food Improvement
  • The process of incorporating biogenetics into the
agricultural world has gained speed in recent
    years
  • The Mansanto Company
  • They have been designing genetically altered
foods that improve availability as well as the
    product
  • Have been heavily criticized for much of their
    work
  • Whats next?
  • At this rate, natural foods are in great danger
  • Should genetically altered foods be banned by the
    government?

  • The Marquis de Condorcet
  • Esquisse dun tableau historique des progres de
    lesprit humain (1795)
  • The development of the human race was slowly but
    surely leaving the darkness and
  • emerging into the light.
  • The human race knows no intrinsic limitations, it
    is indefinitely perfectable.
  • Perfection of human beings could continue forever.

Based on the present developments and future
ideas of these technologies, the next logical
step in the field of biological engineering would
be to create an ideal human with genetically
altered strength, impervious to disease and fed
with the most nutritious, healthy meals.
Furthermore, we have discovered that this field
which was once regarded as nothing more than
science fiction has become an approaching
reality.
