Vision
SCHOOL OF MATHEMATICS
To be recognized as the global excellence model
in research and education in Mathematics.
Mission
  • To offer professional degree programs in
Mathematics designed to fully develop the
    professional potential of students.
  • To produce proficient graduates for employment in
    technologically challenging areas in academia
    and industry.
  • To provide foundational support in mathematics
for various academic programs across the
    institute.
  • To carry out quality research in pure and applied
    mathematics.
  • To ensure the attainment of goals in accordance
with the institutes thrust and directions.

School of Mathematics (SoM) at Thapar Institute
of Engineering and Technology (TIET) was
established as an independent entity in 2015 to
promote teaching and research in mathematical
sciences. Earlier the school was part of the
School of Mathematics and Computer Applications,
which came into existence in the year 2002 when
a major academic restructuring of different
schools and departments took place at the TIET.
Our growth has been stimulated by mathematics and
computing being vitally important disciplines
that underpin a vast range of human endeavors,
and with the increasing quantification and the
digitization of the world they are set to become
even more important.

M.Sc. (Mathematics and Computing)
Academic Programs
Ph.D. Programme The school has at present 29
dedicated faculty members working in many
diverse areas of mathematics with a wide range
of specialization. As of 2020, the school has
awarded 68 PhDs and 40 are currently ongoing.
The School offers Ph.D. degrees with the
following specializations
The M.Sc. (Mathematics and Computing) Programme
is a combination of mathematics with computer
science. Covering the major areas in demand
today, this programme is of utmost value to the
aspiring graduate student with mathematics
background. The course provides students with
comprehensive theoretical knowledge and also
practical training in computer science and
numerical computing. This programme has been
introduced due to the need for sophisticated
mathematics for modern scientific computation.
The curriculum is designed to provide students
with in-depth theoretical background and
practical training in computer science and
numerical computing so that a student becomes
competent to accept challenges in mathematics at
national and international levels.

M.Sc. (Mathematics) The M.Sc. (Mathematics)
programme is of utmost value to the aspiring
graduate students with mathematics background.
This study of Mathematics enables students to
take up a variety of careers ranging from
academic research, education, development and
quantitative applications in the industry. This
course provides students with the ability to
apply analytical and theoretical skills to model
real life problems and solve them
mathematically. This programme has been
introduced due to the need for sophisticated
mathematics for modern scientific investigations
and technological developments.
