  • MAINTAIN RESPIRATIONS
  • TREAT SHOCK
  • IMMOBILIZE THE AFFECTED AREA
  • PREVENT FURTHER INJURY

  • Usually a twisting injury
  • Injures ligaments holding bones together

SYMPTOMS
  • Swelling pain
  • Limited Movement
  • TREATMENT
  • Apply Ice to decrease swelling
  • Elavate Rest injured part
  • Compression
  • RICE

  • Emergency care
  • Prevention of infection
  • Maintain mobility
  • Return to normal functioning

Splint
  • Device used to immobilize an injured limb or body
    part

Splint Considerations
  • Splint should be long enough to immobilize above
    and below the injury
  • Splint should be padded with soft material before
    applying to injured area
  • Splint should not be applied directly over injury
    if bleeding or open would present. Cover with
    dressing or bandage first

  • Never try to replace broken bone
  • Check circulation after splint is applied by
    noting the following
  • pale or bluish color
  • cold to touch
  • Swelling or edema
  • pain or pressure form splint
  • Numbness or tingling in extremity
  • Poor circulation by blanching
