  • REVISITING THE NEW JERSEY HEALTH AND PE STANDARDS

  • New Jersey law requires 150 minutes per week of
    health, safety, and physical education for all
    students in grades 1-12
  • Law has been in effect since 1917!

  • Six Comprehensive Health and Physical Education
    Core Curriculum Content Standards adopted in 1996
  • Curriculum Framework published in 1999

  • Core standards were developed after review of
  • State statutes
  • State regulations
  • National standards in both disciplines
  • Best practices
  • Current programs (e.g. text, software)

  • Review of standards required every five years
  • Review team assembled in May 2001
  • Consultant from AAHPERD engaged to train team and
    review document

  • Expected adoption in December 2003
  • Immediate implementationalignment with local
    curriculum
