THE PAST

• New Jersey law requires 150 minutes per week of
  health, safety, and physical education for all
  students in grades 1-12
• Law has been in effect since 1917! (WWI era)

• Six Comprehensive Health and Physical Education
  Core Curriculum Content Standards adopted in 1996
• Curriculum Framework published in 1999

• Core standards were developed after review of
• State statutes
• State regulations
• National standards in both disciplines
• Best practices
• Current programs (e.g. text, software)

THE PRESENT

• Review of standards required every five years
• Review team assembled in May 2001
• Consultant from AAHPERD engaged to train team and
  review document

THE PRESENT

• Employed backwards design
• Developed smaller grade level clusters
• Increased specificity of CPIs
• Retained blended model

THE FUTURE

• Standards went before State Board in April 2003
• Delayed with graduation requirement discussion
• Expected adoption in December 2003
• Immediate implementationalignment with local
  curriculum
• Updated 2009

THE PRESENT

• Links to Career Education, Consumer, Family and
  Life Skills
• Character development, Service learning, Ethics,
  Advertising, Safety (Hazards and first aid
  procedures - Traffic and driver safety)

THE FUTURE

• No state testing in these areas
• No funds to support local assessment development
• School district evaluations every 7 years
• Not part of NCLBlittle focus at the state and
  local level there is always hope and advocacy
• New revised standards around the corner
