• As ancient volcanoes erupted they released water
  vapor into the atmosphere
• When the water vapor cooled enough it formed
  clouds and then precipitation
• Water collected in low areas and formed oceans

• Rivers and groundwater dissolve materials from
  rocks and carry them to the oceans
• Erupting volcanoes add other materials
• Most abundant elements are sodium and chloride
  (salt)

• All of the gases in Earths atmosphere are also
  dissolved in ocean water
• Oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen
• Organisms in the water also produces gases like
  oxygen through photosynthesis
• Organisms that carry on photosynthesis live near
  the top to get sunlight
