Mountains From Rocks
2
  • Mountains are associted with the edges of the
    Earths plates.
  • Mountains form where two of the Earths plates
    meet.

4
Fold Mountains
  • Where plates meet head-on.
  • As the lower plate plunges into the mantle, the
crust on the upper plate may fold under the
    pressure, forming fold mountains.

5
The Coast Mountains
  • The west coast of North America is mountainous.
  • The North American plate is moving west,
colliding with the plates under the Pacific
    Ocean.

6
  • The Juan de Fuca plate under the Pacific Ocean at
British Columbia is being forced down under the
    North American plate.

7
The Himalayas
  • Highest mountain range in the world (on land!)
  • The plate carrying India is moving north
colliding with the Eurasian plate creating fold
    mountains.

8
  • Mount Everest

9
Fault-Block Mountains
  • Faults are areas where plates slip past each
    other.
  • As they slip past each other they have a grinding
stop and start movement as the edges of the plate
catch and push on each other.

10
  • This pushing can generate pressure and can cause
cracking as pieces of one plate are pushed up or
    down.

11
Dome Mountains
  • Dome Mountains form when magma moving up through
the mantle encounters sedimentary rock in the
Earths crust that will not crack.
  • The magma pushes the layers above into a dome
that rises higher than the surrounding land.

Mountain Formation Flip Book
  • Using the template provided create a flip book
illustrating the formation of one type of
    mountain.
  • Choose one type of mountain.
  • Draw pictures in each of the boxes of the
    template.
  • Each picture should be at a new stage of mountain
    development.
  • When you are finished cut out the squares and
staple them together at the side to create a flip
    book showing a mountain developing.
