Title: Technological Impacts

1
November 1, 2009
Write each question and use notes from yesterday
to answer.
  • Before you can solve any problem, what are two
    things you must know?
  • 2. During the research and brainstorm step of
the design process, how can the creativity of the
    participant students be sparked?
  • 3. When designing a solution, what do you do
once youve settled on an idea to develop?

1the heart of the problem and constraints placed
before you
2there are know bad ideas know matter how crazy
it seems
3prepare detailed drawings and engineering plans
and solicit feed back
2
The Engineering Design Process
  • PURPOSE OF LESSON
  • To enable students to understand and apply the
    design process.

3
ENGINEERING DESIGN PROCESS
  • Clearly Defined Steps
  • Defining a problem
  • Identifying criteria and specifying
    constraints
  • Brainstorming
  • Researching and generating ideas
  • Exploring possibilities
  • Selecting an approach
  • Developing a design proposal
  • Making a model or prototype
  • Testing and evaluating the design, using
    specifications
  • Refining the design
  • Creating or making it
  • Communicating processes and results

4
Step 1 Defining the Problem
  • Describe the situation that needs a technological
    solution
  • What must your solution accomplish?
  • What is the need or desire?

Outcome Sentences, Paragraphs, Lists
5
Step 2 Identifying Criteria/Constraints
  • Establish the criteria and constraints under
    which the solution must operate
  • What are solution requirements (criteria)?
  • What are the limitations on the solution
    (constraints)?

THIS IS A CHANGE
Outcome Sentences, Lists, Charts
6
Steps 3 4 Brainstorm/ Research/ Generate
Ideas
  • Gather information obtain background
information needed to begin developing solutions
    to the problem/situation
  • What specific information do you need to know
    prior to designing your solution?
  • What criteria/constraint details must you be
    informed about?

Outcome Sentences, Paragraphs, Lists, Charts
7
Step 5 Exploring Possibilities
  • Develop possible solutions to the
    problem/opportunity
  • Come up with at least 3 solutions to the problems
    you must solve
  • General sketches, then detailed sketches
  • Does each satisfy the criteria and fit within the
    constraints?

PLAUSIBLE SOLUTIONS!
Outcome Sentences, Lists, Charts, Sketches
8
Step 6 Select an Approach
  • Isolate, refine, and detail the best solution
  • Modify
  • Integrate components
  • Improve
  • Detailed sketches

Outcome Sentences, Lists, Charts, Sketches
9
Step 7 Develop Design Proposal
  • An explanation of your final design
  • Detailed drafted drawings
  • Steps to make it
  • Explanation of how it satisfies all criteria and
    constraints

Outcome Sentences, Lists, Charts, Sketches
10
Step 8 Make Model/Prototype
MUST GET PROPOSAL PASSED FIRST
  • Make it!
  • Prototype will be tested

Outcome Sentences, Lists, Charts, Sketches
11
Step 9 Test Model/Prototype
  • Once you make your prototype, test it to ensure
that it works. Also, calibrate your prototype to
    satisfy criteria and constraints.
  • DOCUMENT YOUR TESTING
  • PROCESS and RESULTS

12
Step 10 Refine the Design
  • After testing in step 9, document any changes you
    need to make.

Step 11 Create/Make it
  • Implement any changes decided upon in step 10.
    Prepare for the competition.

13
Step 12 Communicate Processes and Results
  • Describe how the final solution meets design
    criteria and constraints.
  • FINAL COMMUNICATION REPORT

14
Design Project 1
MOUSE TRAP CAR?
Objective To enable you to understand and use
the Engineering Design Process
15
CLASSWORK / HOMEWORK
