Title: Reptiles

1
Reptiles
  • Reptiles are ectotherms. They have scaly skin
which help protect them. Some reptiles have legs
, but some have adapted to moving without legs
    like snakes

2
Facts about Reptiles
  • Reptiles first appeared on Earth approximately
    340 million years ago.
  • Reptiles are divided into four groups Turtles,
    Squamata, Crocodilians, and Tuataras.
  • There are 8000 known species of reptiles, the
    most of them are squamata.

3
Turtles
  • Turtles are the most ancient of the groups, and
havent changed much since they have been on
Earth for hundreds of millions of years.
  • Reptiles are located on every Continent except
    Antarctica
  • .
  • Turtles are found in salt
  • and fresh water.
  • Turtles has protective shells
  • which can be used for
  • camouflage also.

4
Squamata
  • The Squamata group includes snakes and lizards.
Squamatas shed their skin and have jointed jaws
which make them have a powerful bite.
  • Snakes can be found in deserts, forest, lakes,
    stream, and oceans.
  • Lizards can be found in forest and deserts.

5
Crocodilians
  • Crocodilians first appeared around 80 million
    years ago.
  • This group includes alligators, crocodiles,
    gharials, and caimans.
  • Crocodilians usually live in lakes, oceans,
    rivers, and mangroves.

6
Tuataras
  • Tuataras are similar looking to lizards but do
not have jointed jaws like lizards.
  • Tuataras used to be spread everywhere but now
    there are only two species.
  • They are located in the New Zealand islands.

7
Cold Blooded
  • Reptiles are cold blooded which means they cannot
make there own heat, unlike mammals or birds who
    can make there own heat.
  • Reptiles need to find environmental sources for
heat like the sun, basking, and shade

8
Reptile Diets
  • Squamata- Most small lizards and snakes feed on
    insects and invertebrates.
  • Turtles diet are based on if they are
    carnivorous (meat eaters), herbivores (plant
eaters), or omnivores (meat and plant eaters)
  • Crocodilians are carnivorous, they feed on fish,
birds, turtles, buffalo. They are usually the top
    predators in there environments.
  • Tuataras eat insects, small invertebrates, and
    birds

9
Reproduction
  • Reptiles lay eggs that have tough shells. The
amniotic egg, contains membranes that protect the
embryo, which is a undeveloped offspring and
helps get rid of waste. Many reptiles like
turtles, give there young little or no help.
