Characteristics of Lipids

• Composed of Carbon, Hydrogen, and Oxygen
• Greater than 21 ratio of HO
• Includes fats, oils, phospholipids, and
  cholesterol.
• Building blocks are triglycerides which are
  composed of 3 fatty acids and 1 glycerol.
• Energy storage molecules
• Phospholipids help make up part of the cell
  membrane.

Carboxyl Acid Group

• Carboxyl group (COOH) found on each fatty acid
• gives it the acid properties. All fatty acids
  and
• therefore each lipid has this group in it.

Unsaturated Fatty Acid are liquids, they have
less then the max of C atoms ex. oils
Saturated Fatty Acids Are Solids max of C
atoms it can hold Ex. waxes
