SWBAT combine like terms to simplify expressions
Fri, 8/19
  • Agenda
  • Warm-up (5 min)
  • Review HW2 (15 min)
  • Combining like terms with lots of examples (20
    min)
  • Warm-Up
  • Given a2 4a 3
  • Algebraic equation or expression
  • Terms
  • Variable terms
  • Constant term
  • Coefficients
  • HW3 Combining like terms

2
  • Example a2 4a 3
  • Algebraic equation or expression expression
  • Terms a2, -4a, 3
  • Variable terms a2, -4a
  • Constant term 3
  • Coefficients 1, -4

Warning!!! Always take the sign that is in front
of the coefficient!
3
  • Lets review HW1

4
Algebraic ExpressionsObjective To combine like
terms to simplify expressions
  • Infinity HS
  • Ms. Sophia Papaefthimiou

5
Like Terms
Like Terms are terms with the same variable AND
the same exponent.
To simplify expressions with like terms, simply
combine the like terms.
6

Are these like terms? 1) 13k, 22k
Yes, the variables and exponents are the
same. 2) 5ab, 4ba Yes, the order of the
variables doesnt matter. (Commandment 9) 3)
x3y, xy3 No, the exponents are on different
variables.
7
WARNING!!!!
  • You calculate the answer using the sign that is
to the left of the number or variable.

1.) Which of the following is the simplified
form of -4x 7x ?
