RELIGION
  • Effects on the 13 Colonies

2
Brief history of religion in England
  • began to split into many different churches who
protested some of the practices of the Catholic
    Church during the Reformation.
  • began in England with King Henry VIII who
established the Church of England with himself as
its head when the Pope, head of the Roman
Catholic Church, denied him a divorce.
  • During those disputes, the dominant religion
persecuted members of the other church imposing
    fines, imprisonment, and execution.
  • Eventually, the Anglican Church became
established as the permanent official Church of
    England
  • Catholic Church originally dominated all of
    Western Europe
  • The Protestant Reformation
  • Disputes between the Catholic and Anglican Church
    continued after Henrys death.

  • Public Education
  • (including Quaker, Puritan, and Presbyterian) had
surfaced during this time of religious dispute.
  • was taken very seriously in the 1600s and 1700s.
Churches were the center of social life, but also
performed many of the functions of governments
    (churches built roads in Virginia).
  • can be traced to the Puritan emphasis on reading
    the Bible.

4
Religion in England cont.
  • The official church supported the reigning
    monarchs right to the throne
  • Government
  • questioning the church was usually considered to
be questioning the monarch (a form of treason).
  • Many laws supported the beliefs of the official
church, making it a crime to disagree with the
    established religion.
