2Japanese Internment
- After Japans attack on Pearl Harbor, many
Californians began to fear that
Japanese-Americans were spying for Japan.
President Roosevelt responded to pressures from
West Coast politicians to do something about
these fears by signing an Executive Order. This
law required all Japanese-Americans living within
200 miles of the Pacific Coast to move out of
their homes and into internment camps in
Colorado, Utah, Arkansas and other interior
states. More than 100,000 Japanese Americans,
citizens and noncitizens, lost their homes and
possessions in this relocation.

the government sometime in the middle of 1942 to
explain the governments reasons and strategies
for interning (holding) Japanese Americans. This
was before television was widespread, and long
before computers and the internet! While we
