Matter
  • Matter is anything that takes up space and has
    mass
  • Use properties to distinguish between materials
    and classify them
  • Properties are in two sets of types intensive or
    extensive, and physical or chemical

6
Properties
  • Physical properties
  • characteristics of matter that can be changed
    without changing its composition
  • Ex color, size, state, conductivity, volume, mass

7
Properties
  • Chemical properties
  • characteristics that describe the way substances
may change to form other substances
  • Ex oxygen burns, iron rusts

8
Changes
  • Matter is constantly changing
  • Two types of changes to matter-physical and
    chemical
  • Energy always involved in any change (absorbed or
    released)

9
Changes
  • Physical
  • change in matters property, but not what makes
    it up
  • Ex tearing, melting, dissolving

10
Changes
  • Chemical
  • Change in matter that produces a different
    substance than before
  • Ex burning charcoal, milk souring, iron rusting

11
Chemical Changes
  • Chemical changes are also called chemical
    reactions
  • Substances present at the start of a reaction are
    called reactants
  • New substances created in a reaction are called
