Reflexive SE
  • Reflexive pronouns are used anytime the same
    person is both doing and receiving the action of
    the verb.
  • IePaco se afeita todas las mañanas.

Reciprocal Action SE
  • Reflexive pronouns are used to indicate
    reciprocal action or when people are doing
    something to each other.
  • IeLos novios se besan cada
  • día.

Combination Pronoun SE
  • If the indirect and direct object pronouns are
    used together AND both are box 3 or 5 then the
    indirect object LE or LES changes to SE.
  • IePaco se lo da a Marta.

Impersonal SE
  • Used when it is not necessary to identify the
    DOER of the action. Usually third person
    singular.
  • ieSe debe estudiar más para sacar mejores notas.
  • One should study more to get better grades.

Passive SE
  • In the true passive voice, the subject receives
    rather than does the action.
  • ieThe glass was broken by the little boy. -
    El vaso fue roto por el niño.
  • (Object SER past part. por agent)
  • The SE substitution for the passive voice is as
    follows
  • ieThe glass was broken Se rompió el vaso
  • (Se verb object)

Accidental SE
  • Indirect objects are often used with the SE for
    passive voice construction to imply that the
    action happened accidentally or to indicate that
    the person involved was not to blame for the
    accident.
  • ieSe me olvidó la tarea. I forgot my homework.
  • (Se I.O.P. box 3 or box 5 verb object)
  • (usually in preterite)
  • Olvidar, Perder, Romper, Etc
