  • Communicating with supervisors.

    on skills that need to be worked on to improve,
    do not come naturally.
  • Intellectuals are professional thinkers and
    communicators.

Communication with supervisor advisors
  • Supervisor is scarce resource.
  • Help your advisors to help you.
  • You are becoming a professional intellectual --
    behave like one.

Communicating your research
  • Tendency to present against a sense of inadequacy
    -- avoid!
  • Understand your audience objectives (e.g., job
    talk).
  • Have a cocktail party version of research
    concepts.
  • When interviewing, think out loud.
  • Dont over-prepare (time limit, pages, calendar).
  • REHEARSE!

Transition to professional presenter
  • Find your own style -- role models, actively
    improve.
  • Know what you are trying to teach.
  • Fit your method to your objective.
  • Lecture presents small number of ideas (two or
    three at most).Tell them this point in the
    clearest language possible.
  • Teach to the smartest.
  • Use your own passion for the subject.
