Websters Collegiate Dictionary

• This is the standard desk dictionarythe one we
  editors all have on our desks at the magazine.
  It is amazing how many useful things it contains
  besides the wordslist of proper names,
  geographical names, foreign phrases, etc.

• a very handy collection of synonyms

The Columbia Encyclopedia

• one volume, I think, though perhaps in some
  editions it is three volumes. I have never used
  because I use the Encyclopedia Brittanica
• A P.S. Of course I swear by The
  Brittannicacouldnt live without it. Also
  Petersons Field Guide to the Birds and various
  books on flowers which Im sure would be of no
  interest to you.

Fowlers English Usage

• I believe you have this. Bergen Evans and his
  sister have brought out a good book of American
  usage, which is supposed to better than the
  American edition of Fowler, which was edited by
  Margaret Nicholson. s English Usage

• I suppose you have Cassells French-English
  Dictionarythe small handy reference edition
• The checkers tell me the comparable
  German-English deictionary is Cassells
  German-English Dictionary.

• Bulfinchs Mythology(useful on Greek and Roman
  and Arthurian and (I guess?) Norse myths

• When the little text book Andy is editing comes
  out next spring (MacMillan), it might prove
  useful.
• Will Strunk Jr. The Elements of English Style.
  It is also to have a trade edition and it is, I
  think, funny as well as useful.
