6Neighbourhood Selection for Phase 1
- In May 2005, the Research Action Team, (the
community-based team that guides the research),
selected the first two (of 25) neighbourhoods in
the Central Okanaganto be surveyed - The Outcome
- Shannon Lake and Northeast Rutland were selected
for Phase 1 (the remaining neighbourhoods will be
surveyed in Phase 2 or 3)
7Parent-Volunteers
- One of the main goals of the Dialogue is to
connect parents/guardians in our community. - In June 2005, CATCH trained 12 parent-volunteers
to interview other parents/guardians in Shannon
Lake and Northeast Rutland - The volunteers were taught semi-structured
interview-techniques which encourage two-way
conversation and openness
8Interviews
- Each interview was conducted by a team of
interviewers (one interviewer and one notetaker) - The interviews took place in the familys home at
their convenience - The interviews ran from July to August 2005
9What did we talk about?
10What will this tell us?
- The information provided by the families during
these interviews help us to
To learn about the experiences of families with
young children in the Central Okanagan
To identify gaps and needs in supports and
services
To identify barriers that parents and children
face when accessing services
To gather information for a community-based Early
Childhood Development Plan
To determine the effectiveness of asset mapping
for developing an Early Childhood Development
Plan
To identify the services and supports that
currently exist in the Central Okanagan
