Title: Hosting Great Sport Events
1Hosting Great Sport Events
2Vision Statement To demonstrate the uniqueness
of the T.C.O. by hosting a Great Sport Event that
met and exceeded the requirements of everyone
saluting the Canadian athletes participating in
the2002 Winter Olympics in Sault Lake City
3Todays Situation
- Summary of the current situation
- In some areas it is very difficult to find
volunteers who will commit to participating at
any level of hosting great sports events. This
effects the quality of the activity. - Reasons
- Negative experience
- Poor training
- Limited support
- Questionable recognition
- Volunteers can be left at the end of the day with
a feeling of holding the bag!

whole thing a pain?
5How Did We Get Here?
- Could the Super Volunteer be the problem?
- Unaware of the values of Mentorship
- Do we give the volunteer ownership or just
responsibility? - Do we give recognition that genuinely comes from
the heart?
6Available Options
- Identify Super Volunteer and place them
strategically. - Introduce a mentorship program to the Super
Volunteer. - Put sophomore volunteers in leadership position
with a mentor. - Lots of genuinely positive communication with
leader volunteers and mentors.
7Recommendation
- Start by living the Golden Rule. (Do we all know
it?) - City Leaders will recognize the Super Volunteer.
- City Leaders will react to knowledgeable,
productive and enthusiastic volunteers. Train
your volunteers well. - Keep your City Leaders well informed on
everything you do. - Make everything you do a news item. You may not
get the desired result instantly, but persistence
will pay off.
