Speaking
A I dont think learning a language is so
difficult. When you live in a country where you
speak that language, you can hear it and practise
it every day.
B Well, that would certainly be helpful, but not
everybody can go abroad. Besides, it should be
possible to learn a language well before going to
another country.
C I agree with A.
B I think it depends on yourself. Of course you
have to spend enough time on learning.
6
D Do you think its a matter of time?
B Yes. You are right. Time is the most
important. The more time you take to ractise, the
better youll be.
A That depends on you. Its hard to tell, but
for easy language such as English you can learn a
lot in only a few hundred house.
D Some people spend a whole lifetime without
really learning much.
C Very funny! It sounds nice, but some languages
are too difficult. Take Chinese, for example, how
many hours will it take to learn that?
7
B Yes, Thats a good example. Chinese takes
perhaps four or five times more time to learn
than English of Spanish.
D You mean for somebody whose language isnt
English or Chinese?
B Exactly.
C I disagree. I think you are wrong thinking
that it will take anyone a short time to learn
English, but a long time t learn Chinese. Both
English and Chinese are very different, thats
why it takes Englishmen a long time to learn
Chinese. But then it should work the other way
around as well. Because they are so different .
It will take Chinese people four times more time
to learn English than for example somebody who
speak Spanish.
8
A Of course it is easy to learn geography by
reading a book and studying a map. You just look
at the map and remember where places are. It is
as simple as that.
B Im not so sure about that. I havent really
thought about it before , but I think the only
geography I know very well is that of China, of
other countries I have some idea where places
are, but it feels different from the way I know
it for China.
A Surely it must be possible to learn it from
maps, how else can you teach geography?
C Well. It sounds as if both of you are right,
in a way. I agree that what you can learn from a
map is not exactly the same as when you go
somewhere.
9
A Oh heres another. Dont you think you can
study a map and then find your way through the
mountains. There, you see.
D Yes, you are right, but you wouldnt really
know where the mountains are, how high they are
and how broad. Isnt that what you were thinking
of , B?
B Yes, you are right.
C Of course it should be like that. After all,
maps are only representations of the country.
They are a bit like a model.
D I believe youve got it right. Maps are not
the real thing. You cannot learn everything form
books. You have to experience things to make it
real and meaningful
10
A I have never thought much about this, but sure
seems so, doesnt it?
B What?
A Well, that small island countries have better
chances to become rich than other countries.
C I dont think so. There are so many small
island countries , and not all of them are rich.
B Thats true, but dont you think it is more
than just chance that Japan and the UK belong to
the tight strong countries in the world? Two out
of eight. Thats a lot, you know.
11
C Yes, you are right, but what about so many
other island countries that are not so strong,
for example. New Zealand?
D Im afraid youre wrong. Its true that not
all island countries are strong but they should
be neither too big nor too small. At the
difference with New Zealand is that it is quite a
young country. England and Japan have been
independent for hundreds of years to built up.
Dont you think that explain why they are so rich?
C You may be right.
A I once heard that most big cities are built on
the bank of a river. The water helped the
townspeople to do their trade, and thats how
they became rich. I guess that must be
double-plus good for island states then. They are
12
all surrounded by water.
B I believe youve got that right. On rich
island states most cities have a harbour, and
they trade with foreign countries.
D well. So does China. China also has many parts
along the coast.
B Right. So the eastern part of the coast is the
richest part of the country, isnt it?
D Yes, but then your theory doesnt work,
because China is not one of the eight richest
countries in the world.
B Well. I didnt say that what was a rule for
island states is also a rule for big countries.
With big countries it is different.
