Off the Georgia Coast
  • Off the coast of Georgia are the Barrier Islands.
  • They are also called The Golden Isles.

Golden Isle Trivia
  • Cumberland Island is known for its wild horses.
  • Ancient Indians named Tybee Island Salt.
  • Ossabaw was named by the Creek and Muscogean
    Indians for the leaves of a yaupon holly that
    would induce vomiting.
  • Spanish Explorers were the first to claim Jekyll
    Island in 1510 and called it Whale Island.

  • Lets look at Salt Water Marshes
  • What is it?
  • Coastal Wetland rich in marine life
  • How are they formed?
  • They are formed from the sediment, sand, and soil
    brought down by the rivers.

  • Cordgrass
  • The root structure actually grows horizontally
    (sideways).
  • This root systems slows down erosion and holds
    the marsh together.
  • It also protects them from freezes and fire.
