Background and Objetives
  • Encourage the use of OSS across EO value chain
  • Inventory of OS solutions within GEO
  • Post the inventory into the Web Portal
  • Encourage development of OSS solutions by
    building on existing efforts
  • TerraLib and TerraView as starting GIS platforms
(integrated Earth Observation and GIS data)

3
Milestones achieved to date
  1. Building on existing inventories to identify OSS
solutions for use in GEO. Pilot implementations
in OSS for selected Tasks, and capacity building
    activities On going activity
  2. Develop the capabilities of end-users of
    geographical information with no programming
skills by providing access and support to a full
OSS GIS application package such as TerraView
    (http//www.dpi.inpe.br/terraview) done.

    English) and develop specialized training
    material for e-learning.
  • TerraView Site in English
  • TerraLib team has been working on a plain new
version of the library (version 4.0)

Current StatusCBERS-2B reception stations in
Africa
  • Maspalomas operated by INTA (Spain)
  • Still with technical problem, should be
operational by the end of the year.
  • Malindi (Kenya) and Matera Both operated by ASI
    (Italy)
  • Under negotiation
  • Hartebeeshoek operated by CSIR (South Africa)
  • Probably experimental by the end of the year
  • Aswan Egypt (NARSS)
  • It was not on the initial plan some tests last
    month, probably experimental antenna

10
Expected Products
  • Image Distribution will be carried out by means
of the GEONetCast system, created by the GEO, as
well as through other channels on the internet
    (Image catalog and FTP)

11
Final remarks
  • Combining open source software with the technical
workforce available in developing countries can
