1
Trip to the Moon Story
2
Shuttle and Rocket Information
  • Total Weight 4,400,000 lbs.
  • Thrust needed for lift off 7,000,000 lbs.
  • Escape velocity 25,000 mph
  • G-forces 3 g

3
G-forces
  • A human centrifuge is used to train people to
    experience g force.
  • The centrifuge spins around quickly causing a
tremendous amount of weight and pressure on the
    person.

4
Blast Off and Into Space
  • Blast off includes a tremendous amount of noise,
shaking, and g force pressure on a person.
  • As the space craft leaves earth the g
forces reduce until a person is weightless.

5
Living in Space
6
Moon Information
  • 240,000 miles away
  • 3-4 day trip
  • Gravity is 1/6 of earths gravity
  • No atmosphere
  • Rocks and dust from impact craters
  • Some water discovered
  • Weak moonquakes
  • There are at least four different kinds of
moonquakes (1) deep moonquakes about 700 km
below the surface, probably caused by tides (2)
vibrations from the impact of meteorites (3)
thermal quakes caused by the expansion of the
frigid crust when first illuminated by the
morning sun after two weeks of deep-freeze lunar
night and (4) shallow moonquakes only 20 or 30
    kilometers below the surface.
