Types of Lyric Poetry
  • There are many forms of lyric poetry including
  • Odes
  • and
  • Sonnets

Odes
  • long poems which are serious in nature and
    written to a set structure.
  • They are dedicated to one theme to honor its
    subject, usually an important person or idea such
    as freedom.

  • 14-line lyric poetry
  • Show two related but different things to the
    reader to communicate something about them
  • Have a very specific structure

Types of Sonnets
  • The two major types
  • 1. English (or Shakespearean)
  • 2. Italian (or Petrarchan)
  • Both are named after the poets that
  • made them famous

Characteristics of English Sonnet
  • Contains three quatrains and a concluding couplet
  • Each quatrain makes a point or gives an example
  • The couplet sums it all up

  • Couplets are two-line rhymes
  • A Robin Redbreast in a cage
  • Puts all Heaven in a rage.
  • A skylark wounded on the wing

Italian (Petrarchan) Sonnets

  • A ballad is a story in

Epic Poems
  • long, serious poems that tells the story of a
    heroic figure
  • Some of the most famous epic poems are The Iliad
    and The Odyssey by Homer
