What is IPM?
  • IPM is an environmentally sensitive and effective
    way of pest management
  • Uses information and research found on life
cycles of pest and how they interact with
    environment
  • Cheapest and least hazardeous

4
Basic IPM Components
  • Acceptable Pest levels
  • Also know as action threshold
  • Basically seeing a single pest, doesnt mean
    control measures must be take

5
Basic IPM components
  • Monitor and identify pest
  • One must look around and see if thee is any pest,
not just once a month, but multiple times
  • Must be able to identify pest, some insects or
    weeds found
  • could actually be
  • helpful

6
Basic IPM components
  • Cultural Control
  • Goal of this is to make the land less favorable
    for pest
  • These could include
  • Crop rotation
  • Selecting where to plant at
  • Trap crops
  • Planting of certain less favorable plants
  • Adjusting time of harvest

7
Basic IPM components
  • Physical and Mechanical control
  • Physical barriers
  • Row covers or trenches prevent insects from
    reaching plants
  • Hand picking of pest
  • Sticky boards/tape to catch flying insects
  • Numerous other trapping techniques

8
Basic IPM components
  • Chemical control
  • Last step, if all others didnt work than resort
    to this
  • Try to use ecofriendly chemicals
  • Organic/biotanical pesticides preferred

9
What Are Pests?
  • An organism, usually an insect, in which is
presences is unwanted, and most likely harmful
  • Can also be used to refer to harmful weeds,
    fungi, diseases, and viruses

10
Harmful Pest in US
  • Armyworms
  • Spider Mites
  • Flea Beatle
  • Harvest Mites
  • Cabbage Butterfly

11
What are Pesticides?
  • Substance or mixture used to eradicate pests
  • Can occur naturally or be synthetic
  • Can be harmful

12
Why Are Pesticides Harmful?
  • We eat the food in which these harmful chemicals
    put on, endangering us
  • Increase chance of cancers
  • Genetic damage
  • Harm helpful insects
  • Can harm animals around these harmful pesticides

13
DDT
  • Originally used to control malaria and typhus
  • Highly toxic to aquatic life
  • Well known for reducing reproduction in birds
  • Bald eagles
  • Brown Pelican
  • Peregrine Falcon

14
Immunity to pesticides
  • Pest are getting more genetically fit to not let
    these effect them
  • Can become immune to it after a while

15
How does IPM reduce use of pesticides?
  • When using IPM chemical control, is the last
    resort
  • The main goal is to see if pest are actually
    harmful
  • If not than nothing goes on
