    plane trees and other trees that grow in the high
    mountains surrounding Delphi.

  • The site was first settled in Mycenaean times in
    the late Bronze Age (1500-1100 BCE).
  • Ruled by 12 aristocrats.
  • Delphi is now a major archaeological site with
    well-preserved ruins

  • The sanctuary of Delphi held many religious
    ceremonies and events.
  • Delphi was a revered and sacred spot to people
    all over Greece.
  • Delphi was dedicated to the god, Apollo.
  • Delphi was the most important shrine in Greece.
  • Delphi, held games to honor various gods of the
    Greek religion.

  • Temple of Apollo was destroyed 3 times, but is
    still standing today
  • Ancient Theater built in the 4th century and had
    plays, poetry readings, and musical events during
    the festivals that took place

The Arts
  • The bronze statue represented a chariot with four
    horses. Its height is 1.8m.
  • It was made for Apollo by Polyzalos, the tyrant
    of Gela, in 478 BC, after he won the chariot-race
    at the The Charioteer (Heniochos).
