Title: Improvements

1
Improvements
  1. Use graphs on p. 337 339 341
  2. Better notes on slope!
  3. Freefall! have students determine reaction time
with ruler. Bigger notecards would be better.
    (better later I think)
  4. Determine heights based on dropping things!

Bell Work (on 2.1 sheet)
  • Skiers have set world records by reaching speeds
of over 240 km/hr. How many miles per hour is
    this? (1 km 0.621mi)

4
Bell Work 3/5/14
  • Start a new BW sheet titled x, v, a
  • Calculate the density of an object with a mass of
    15.0 g and a volume of 5.0 cm3.
  • Calculate the mass of an object with a density of
    55.0 kg/m3 and a volume of 20.00 m3.
  • Calculate the volume of an liquid with a mass of
    101 g and a density of 32 g/mL .

5
What is physics?
  • the study of matter, energy, and the interaction
    between them
  • How much weight can this bridge hold?
  • How should we launch this projectile?
  • How fast can one drive around this curve?
  • What will the temperature in the room be?
  • How does sunlight heat Earth?
  • How did the universe begin?

6
  • Today you are going totakes notes on distance,
    displacement, speed, velocity.
  • So you candevelop an understanding of how to
describe motion and solve motion problems.
  • Youll know youve got it when you can
  • Accurately complete the notes sheet questions
  • Define differentiate between distance and
    displacement
  • Define differentiate between speed and velocity

7
Distance
  • The length of the path described by an object
    moving through space
  • OR
  • Length of the path something travels
  • Units of length
  • mi, km, m, yd, ft, in, cm,
  • No / sign!
  • Ex 4.0 mi 35.0 km

8
Displacement
  • The change in position of an object
  • Distance between starting point and ending point
    of object
  • Includes direction
  • Can be negative (negative represents direction)
  • Is always a straight line
  • Units of length
  • mi, km, m, yd, ft, etc.
  • Examples
  • 4.0 miles north
  • 35.0 km _at_ 35o

9
Displacement vs. Distance
  • Similarities
  • Both measure lengths
  • Same units
  • Differences
  • Displacement has direction, distance doesnt
  • Displacement may be negative (negative direction)
  • Displacement is always a straight line

10
Displacement vs. Distance
  • The track is 0.25 mi. Thomas runs around the
track 4 times, then collapses exactly where he
started. What distance did he run? What was his
    displacement?

11
Displacement vs. Distance
  • Ok, now you know the difference between
    displacement and distance!
  • When were math problems or graph problems in
here, we usually wont worry about the
difference. Youll get into that more in
    physics.
  • Well use the variable x for both. When we did
density, we used the variable D for density.
It seems strange to use x for displacement, but
    thats how it is yo!

12
Rates
  • Anything measured with respect to something else.
  • Ex How quickly water is leaking from a faucet
could be described in liters per hr (L/hr)
  • Other rates?

13
Speed
  • Rate of change of distance with respect to time
(how fast an object is moving)
  • speed distance
  • Units of m/s, ft/s, mph, km/hr, km/s, etc.
  • Ex. 55 mi/hr 23 m/s

time
14
Velocity
  • Rate of change of position with respect to time
    (speed with direction)
  • Velocity displacement
  • Units of m/s, ft/s, mph, km/hr, km/s, etc.
  • Ex. - 55 mi/hr 23 m/s _at_23o

time
15
Speed vs. Velocity
  • Similarities
  • Both measure rate at which an object moves
  • Same units
  • Differences
  • Velocity has direction, speed doesnt
  • Velocity may be negative
  • Means its moving in the negative direction

16
Speed vs. Velocity
  • Ok, now you know the difference between speed
    velocity.
  • When were math problems or graph problems in
here, we usually wont worry about the
difference. Youll get into that more in
    physics.
  • Well use the variable V for both.

17
Constant
  • Constant staying the same (remember constant
    variables?)
  • Constant speed speed stays the same
  • Most things dont move with a constant speed.
  • Constant velocity velocity stays the same
  • Means both speed AND _______________ stay the
    same
  • Most things dont move with a constant velocity.

18
  • If something is moving with a constant velocity
of 5.0 mi/hr, what does that mean?
  • How far will it travel in 1 hr? 2 hr? 5 hr?

19
  • If something is traveling with a constant
velocity of 20.0 m/s, what does that mean?
  • How far will it travel in 1.0 s? 2.0 s? 7.0 s?
  • What equation did you use for the above?

20
Do the cow questions in your notes.
  1. A cow runs 25 m in 5.0 seconds. What is the
cows average velocity? (show your work)
  2. The cow then runs the opposite direction with the
    same speed. Average velocity?

21
Speed
  • If you are traveling 80 mi/hr, how long does it
take you to go 80 miles?
  • Chelseas answer

22
Instantaneous Speed/Velocity
  • Speed or velocity at an extremely short time
    interval
  • (speed or velocity at an instant in time)
  • Speedometer
  • Radar gun

23
Bell Work 10/23/14 3 min
  • Put your homework upsidedown on your desk.
  • What are two ways distance and displacement are
    different?
  • Identify which color path gives distance and
    which color path gives displacement.
  • True or False Displacement is always greater
    than or equal to distance.

35
Relative Velocity
  • How fast are you going right now?
  • http//www.youtube.com/watch?vwIzvfki5ozU
  • Also deals with acceleration
  • But its perhaps over your heads
  • Monty Python Song
  • http//www.youtube.com/watch?vvIy76M-4txo
  • A little more approachable, and culturally
    significant!
  • 1 light year distance light can travel in one
    years time. (9,461,000,000,000 km or
    5,878,000,000,000 mi)
  • 6 trillion miles! (1 sig fig)
  • could also add cool solar system movement into
this slide or near here! Maybe thatd be more
    relevant to acceleration though.

36
Relative Velocity
  • Velocity changes depending on your frame of
    reference. Everything everywhere is moving
relative to something. A frame of reference is
what you consider to be standing still.

37
Calculating relative velocity
  • Choose one direction to be positive. The other
    is negative. Add the velocities.

38
Relative Velocity
  • A bus is traveling at 35 mi/hr. Amber throws an
apple at the bus driver with a velocity of 25
mi/hr toward the front of the bus. What is the
apples velocity relative to the bus driver?

39
Relative Velocity
  • A bus is traveling at 35 mi/hr. Amber sees Jason
standing alongside the road. She leans out the
window and throws an apple at him with a velocity
of 25 mi/hr toward the front of the bus. What is
the apples velocity relative to the Jason?

40
Relative Velocity
  • Cameron is racing Vittoria. He is behind, but
driving at 25 mi/hr west. Vittoria is driving at
23 mi/hr west. What is Camerons velocity
    relative to Vittoria?

41
Relative Velocity
  • Mythbusters soccer ball!

42
Optical Illusion
  • Stare long enough and youll see a giraffe!

43
Relative Velocity
  • Kennedy realizes the railroad man is going to
catch her, and shes stolen some loot from a
jewelry store. Still running at 10.0 mph west,
she throws the loot with a velocity of 50.0 mph
relative to her. How fast is the loot moving

  • Today you are going topractice finding the slope
    of a line reading distance/position/displacement
    vs. time graphs
  • So you candevelop an understanding of how graphs
describe motion learn to interpret them.
  • Youll know youve got it when you can
  • Find the displacement and velocity of an object
using a position vs. time graph.

62
Motion Graphs
  • Very useful in analyzing how the motion of an
    object changes.

63
Getting info from motion graphs
  • 3 ways to get information
  • Read graph
  • Find slope
  • Find area under graph
  • Look at labels of the axes!
  • Let units be your guide!!!
  • STUDENTS DONT UNDERSTAND THAT VX/T IS THE SAME
    AS THE GRAPH!?

64
Position (Displacement) vs. Time Graph
  • Read X-axis to find the position (displacement )
  • Find slope for velocity
  • Faster objects steeper (or greater) slopes
  • Object not moving zero slope (flat, horizontal
    line)
  • Area under graph means NOTHING!

65
  1. Where is the object at 2.0 s?
  2. Where is the object at 2.5 s?
  3. Where is the object at 4.0 s?
  4. Where is the object at 5.8 s?

66
Finding Velocity from D vs. T Graph
  • To find the velocity of the object, calculate the
slope of the line segment you want to know about.
  • For example Find the velocity of the person for
the first 5 seconds of their trip.
  • Pick 2 points that are on the line segment.
    Usually, the endpoints work well.
  • Calculate the slope. Be sure to include units.
  • (0, 0) and (5, 10) are the end points.

67
Finding Slope
  • Slope rise

run
68
  • Find the objects velocity at
  • 0.5 s
  • 2.0 s
  • 2.5 s
  • 5.8 s

69
  1. Story?

70
What is the average speed of car A for the entire
trip?
71
Position (displacement) vs. time graph Each
point on the line tells you where the object is
at each instant.
  • A straight line shows constant velocity.
  • Slope of the line gives the magnitude (amount) of
    velocity.

Direct Inverse Relationships
84
  • Direct relationship
  • Directly across one another in equation
  • When on opposite sides of the sign, both are
on top or both on bottom
  • If one doubles, the other doubles!
  • Inverse relationship
  • When on opposite sides of the sign, ones on
top the others on the bottom
  • If you double one, the other is halved
